BEST SINGLES SCENE
Whether it’s happy hour or late night, there’s always big groups of young women and big groups of young men at Butterfield 8. “There’s lots of room, so you can roam and mingle,” says Doug Newhook, regional manager. On Thursday nights, guys have been known to invite girls they’ve just met to join them right away for the Date Night special, a shared appetizer, individual appetizer, shared dessert and a bottle of wine for $50. And some customers don’t stay single. On New Year’s Eve, at a big table filled with friends and family, a man proposed to his girlfriend. They’d met at Butterfield 8’s New York City location. She said yes and bottles of Dom Perrigon popped. On Fridays and Saturdays, you have to be 23 to get in.

BEST NEW BAR
The bartenders are friendly and energetic at Butterfield 8. The bar area is spacious and attractive, with planks of Brazilian chestnut rising seven feet up the wall. Adding to the comfortable feeling are the specials on food and drinks — $3 beers, $4 wine glasses, $5 mixed drinks, and $8 appetizers during the lively happy hour (5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday). The place draws people in their 20s and 30s who work at the corporate headquarters in downtown Stamford. The fun can be carried through a meal in the dining room and into the clubby evening. “Our DJs are incredible,” says Ralph Battista, general manager. From 10:30 to last call, “people don’t stop dancing.”

Avon Theatre Celebrates 70th Anniversary at Butterfield 8

Dining capsules
This new kid on the block wants to be a bar, a club and a restaurant. It's likely to succeed on all three fronts with a spacious and welcoming bar section in front, a nightclub area in back and dining room in between. With avante garde cocktails such as pomegranate martinis, and live entertainment on weekends, the bar and club are nicely handled. But food is often the wild card in such places. Here, however, the food is the real winner, in quality, portion and price. Go for grilled peppercorn-sauced skirt steak, Memphis pulled pork sliders, chipotle-braised beef brisket nachos, salt and pepper fried calamari, or roasted corn chowder with bacon and chicken. And don't skip the signature "cookie smash" dessert -- trust me, it will be a smash hit at your table.

Because Serv-ice is on My List
Are you in the service industry? If your answers is "what the hell is the service industry?," then we have a thing or two in common. BUtterfield8 tells me it includes teachers, doctors, nurses and plumbers...if you can make a good case for being a member of this special subset (with business cards, IDs, pay stubs), then you, my friend, may be eligible for 1/2 price drinks - including bottle service - from 9pm to close on Wednesday night beginning July 1st. So...if you have the nerve to serve, you might get a sweet deal on a discount beverage or six. I won't pretend to understand it, but I love it all the same.

Stamford's Butterfield 8 appealing to supper club crowd
Stamford's Bedford Street restaurant district has an addition. Butterfield 8 is the new kid on the block, and in the same place that was formerly home to the popular Temple Bar. With its large menu of mostly American comfort foods, moderate prices and entertainment lineup, it is likely to attract the same club crowd as Temple Bar. But the quality of the food makes the new restaurant a stand-alone winner for lunch and supper, too.

New Stamford Hot Spots
BUtterfield 8, the old posh telephone exchange (area code) in New York City is now part of the Stamford nightlife fixture. Opening at the place of the old Temple Bar, BUtterfield 8 is the most ambitious nightlife project on Bedford street in quite some time. We were given a private tour of the place in May and the first floor features the main bar area along with a few “Hollywood-style” séparés, which are a bit elevated and with a separate area for comfort and more space for their occupants. The first floor also has a large dining room that can be used for VIP parties, corporate functions and private engagements.
